Textbooks play an important role in Chinese teaching and learning. It is a common phenomenon to use self-compiled textbooks in foreign Chinese teaching institutions.Textbooks compiled by local teachers have certain pertinence for students in their own country or our school, but there are also some limitations.I have been teaching in Confucius Institute of Pahang University in Malaysia for one year.During this period, the teaching material I used was Huayu1 written by local Chinese teachers. The teaching object was the students with no Chinese foundation in the school. This textbook has something in common with HSK Standard Course l,a common textbook compiled by teachers in China,in terms of compilation basis, compilation objectives and applicable objects,so the author intends to make a comparative study of the two.Based on Zhao Jinming’s Evaluation List of Teaching Materials for Chinese as a Foreign Language, this paper makes evaluation and comparison from eight major sections, hoping to find out the advantages and disadvantages of the two teaching materials through scientific evaluation methods, complement each other’ s advantages, improve the compilation quality of the teaching materials, and make certain contributions to the teaching of Chinese. The two textbooks have their own advantages in scientific, practical, interesting,Systematic and communicative aspects.According to Zhao Jinming’s evaluation form, the main body of this paper is divided into five parts:First, the preliminary preparation analysis of the two textbooks.Including the analysis of students’ needs, the basis and purpose of textbook compilation, the total amount and distribution of vocabulary, the language points covered by the textbook, and the items and distribution of functional ideas. The two textbooks are consistent in compilation basis, that is,they are both based on the HSK Syllabus(level 1)and promote learning through examination. Both textbooks have certain examination-oriented characteristics. However, through the author’s questionnaire survey,it is found that Huayu 1 and its compiling purpose are not in conformity with the learning needs of Chinese learners in the school, and vocabulary, language points and functional concepts are somewhat omitted from the syllabus.Second, the overall design of the two textbooks is compared. The compiling theory and compiling style of the two textbooks are specifically compared.Huayu1 follows the concept of combining structure and function, repeatedly trains key sentence patterns and separates languages.HSK Standard Course 1 follows the compiling concept of combining structure, function and culture, and integrates task-based teaching, focusing on cultivating students’ comprehensive ability to use Chinese.Third, the comparison of language materials between the two textbooks. This part compares the text and cultural arrangement of the two textbooks. The text of Huayu 1 is long and rich in content, and the topic is close to students’ life.It is interesting to some extent, but it is difficult and there is no independent cultural section in the textbook. The text of HSK Standard Course 1 is short and simple in content. The topic meets the requirements of the syllabus and the textbook has set up a separate cultural section, but the text is not interesting enough.Fourth, the exercises in the two textbooks are compared. The exercise types of the two textbooks are consistent with the syllabus, but Huayu1 emphasizes mechanical exercises, while HSK Standard Course 1 exercises cover a wide range of contents and focus on communication exercises.Fifth, the comparison of notes between the two textbooks. The commentary of both vocabulary and grammar,HSK Standard Course 1 is more accurate and comprehensive than Huayu 1. |
