Crazy Rich Asians is the first novel of the trilogy of the rich by Singaporean American writer Kevin Kwan.Once published, the book reached the top of the best-seller list for its over two million volumes sale and received substantial attention among the readers. Its adaption film,Crazy Rich Asians(2018),the next Hollywood film featured by a majority cast of Asian actors since the release of The Joy Luck Club(1993),surprisingly became the dark horse after landing in North America in the summer of 2018 and also gained widespread attention among the audience. The story unfurls when American-born Chinese Rachel Chu,economics professor of New York University, agrees to spend the summer holiday with her boyfriend,Nicholas Young who is in fact the richest bachelor in Singapore. After arriving in Singapore, together with hostile attitudes toward Rachel from Nicholas’ s mother Eleanor, vicious behaviours and guess from Nick’s relatives and other rich girls swarmed to Rachel. The thesis focuses on the breakthrough of the images of Chinese females the story presents. From the perspective of post-colonialism,the Chinese culture and customs are translated and the process is undoubtedly added to their interpretation and imagination in the western society. The images of Chinese women in Hollywood films have once been stereotyped as exotic and weak accessories. In previous Chinese American literary works, the images of Chinese females are more or less troubled by their minority, gender and cultural identity, and therefore taken as the other in the western society.By means of Said’s Orientalism and Homi K.Bhabha’s post-colonialist theories, the thesis makes a detailed analysis of the breakthrough of images of Chinese females in the western culture, mainly from aspects of gender and culture. In Crazy Rich Asians,Chinese females are presented in an independent image. They struggle for their own destiny, explore their own value and identity proactively and in the end gain the recognition.Besides,in the last decades, with Chinese and Asian economic development, the mysterious orient is no longer synonymous with the uncivilized, backward and weak“third world”.The Asian life in Crazy Rich Asians is depicted as abundant and exquisite.
