| Since China’s reform and opening up,people’s living standards have been greatly improved, but people’s livelihood issues in China still exist and attract a great deal of attention both at home and abroad.Every year, there appear many expressions related to Chinese people’s livelihood in premiers of the state council’s press conferences after NPC.Those expressions contain unique Chinese characteristics and grow from the Chinese society. Therefore, interpreting people’s livelihood expressions is conducive to other countries’ understanding of China, policies about people’s livelihood and the Chinese government’s attitudes towards people’s livelihood.Nida’s functional equivalence theory has had a profound impact on the translation community. This theory discusses functional equivalence through meaning and different degrees of adequacy in translation. It proposes that the lowest and highest levels of functional equivalence are related to designative and associative meanings of the original text.In view of functional equivalence theory, this thesis selects questions and answers about people’s livelihood in Premier Li Keqiang’s press conferences after NPC from 2016 to 2019 as the corpus, and analyzes the strategies for interpreting people’s livelihood expressions.Firstly, thispaper defines and classifies people’s livelihood expressions and summarizes its characteristics. Then under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the paper analyzes and summarizes some interpreting strategies adopted by the interpreter from the perspective of words and sentences. At the lexical level, the interpreting strategies include literal interpreting, paraphrase, amplification, and shift from lexicon to syntax. At the syntactical level, the interpreting strategies comprise shift of perspectives, paraphrase, and combination. The author expects these strategies can be helpful for interpreters. |
