A Study On Chinese-english Consecutive Interpreting Strategies Of Expressions With Chinese Characteristics Under The Guidance Of Interpretive Theory

The press conference is commonly regarded as a window to let people worldwide understand the development of Chinese politics and economy and thus get people’s close attention.The press conference of the 20 th CPC National Congress is one that should be attached to great importance.In this press conference,expressions with Chinese characteristics frequently appeared,while there were challenges underlined.A good interpretation of these expressions can help the world to understand China well and provide a favorable opportunity for China to promote its culture in the world arena.This thesis studies the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting strategies of expressions with Chinese characteristics,taking the 20 th CPC National Congress press conference as an example,based on the interpretive theory and the video materials on China.org.cn.By reviewing the interpreting performance at the press conference,the author analyzed and classified the translations that clearly reflected the interpreting strategies of the interpreter and found that expressions with Chinese characteristics can be classified into the following five types: political expressions,slogan-like expressions,traditional Chinese expressions,four-character idiomatic expressions,and paralleled expressions.After summarizing,the author tries to analyze the interpreting strategies and concludes with four commonly used strategies: semantic and grammatical addition,omission of secondary information,editing by adjusting word order and choosing proper words,and adaptation in form,content,or style.Moreover,the author found out that omission of secondary information and editing by adjusting word order and choosing proper words are the most commonly used translation strategies of interpreting expressions with Chinese characteristics in press conferences.The author combines text analysis and personal study experience to analyze the appropriate coping strategies of expressions with Chinese characteristics,and gives out reasonable suggestions.
