As common religious belief of Mongolian people,Lamaism plays an important role in Mongolian people’s life.In order to understand the history and current situation of Lamaism in Mongolia,as early as the beginning of the 20 th century,a large number of Japanese religious scholars and visiting scholars came to Mongolia to conduct in-depth investigation on the local Lamaism. After the 9·18 Incident,in order to expand its sphere of influence,Japanese imperialism actively collaborated with the princes in the western region of Inner Mongolia and established the puppet regime in Inner Mongolia. In order to better control the Mongolian people, the Japanese authorities attempted to use the political influence of the Lamaism in the Inner Mongolia region to win over the princes and the people and cultivate the thought of pro Manchu and pro Japanese. After the war of resistance against Japan broke out in full swing,in order to further control Lamaism, the Japanese authorities put forward reform policies for Lamaism.A series of activities have been conducted for Lamaism, such as rectifying temples, eliminating monks, banning politics, setting up Lama schools, sending lamas to study in Japan, and establishing new religious centers. At the same time, the Japanese authorities used the puppet government to hold spiritual conferences, set up religious organizations, and promulgate religious statutes. These are the concrete facts that Japanese imperialism used Lamaism to invade China. This essay will focus on the background, process, policy and specific activities of the Japanese authorities’ investigation of the Lamaism in the Mongolian area.Through the analysis and study of the relevant historical materials,it will explore the issues associated with the governance of the local ethnic groups by the religious policy after the establishment of the puppet Mongolian regime in Japan.
