This paper takes The Standard System of Mandarin Romanization as the research object,analyzing the phonetic nature of the Union System in combination with the Medieval phonological system and comparing the phonology of Peking,Nanking,Hankow,Kiukiang,East Shandung,Central Shandung,Szechwan,Shenxi and Shanxi Dialects to explore the phonetic characteristics of the official dialects in the Late Qing Dynasty.Comparing with other representative Mandarin Romanizations,it deeply analyzes the characteristics and value of the Standard System of Mandarin Romanization.The first is the introduction,mainly introducing the object and significance of the study,the previous researches and the study methods of this paper.The second chapter describes the establishment and achievements of the Educational Association of China and the Mandarin Romanization Committee.It focuses on the background and arrangement of this book and introduces four parts in detail: introduction,phonetic table,syllable table and Chinese characters search table.The third chapter takes the initial system of the Union System as the research object.Compared with the Medieval phonological system,the initial tends to be homonymic and succinct,while the affricate and fricative of nine local dialects are quite different.The fourth chapter takes the final system of the Union System as the research object.Compared with the middle ancient phonology,the differentiation and confluence coexist.And the synchronic comparison of nine local dialects phonology is carried out to explore the confluence and amalgamation of vowels in different regions.The fifth chapter takes the tone system of the Union System as the research object,making a diachronic comparison with the Medieval phonological system and modern Mandarin tone system to explore the special phenomenon of the ruh-sheng.The sixth chapter compares the Union System with the other representative Mandarin Romanizations written by missionaries in termsfrom three aspects of the initial,final and tone and further analyzes the characteristics and value of this book.The conclusion summarizes the phonetic nature and characteristics of this book,discussing the impact of the Union System on the Scheme for the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet and the significance of dialect phonetic materials on the research of Chinese phonetic features,and summarizing the value and shortcoming of this book.
