In the process of acquiring foreign languages, both phonological differences and similarities cause teaching difficulties. In order to correct the mispronunciations and make the process of learning more effective and optimal,a full understanding of the sound substitutions and similarities between the two languages is required. It is possible to acquire such understanding by providing a list of the sounds with detailed descriptions which can be later used as a basis for their juxtaposition,a systematic,point-by-point comparison of the equivalent sounds, that can be referred to as a contrastive analysis of two sound systems. This work explores the differences and similarities between the sounds of Polish and Mandarin using the method of contrastive analysis.Chapter 2 introduces the subject of contrastive research and describes their individual steps.Chapter 3 contains basic information about Polish and Mandarin phonology, describes their transcription systems(IPA,Pinyin)and defines the role that Mandarin plays on the international stage. In Chapter 4,the sounds of the two languages are compared and analyzed, broken down into consonants, glides and vowels.Chapter 5 is a summary of the analysis carried out, drawing the reader’s attention to convergent and divergent elements in the discussed languages. The study contained in this work shows that, apart from significant divergent elements, the sounds of Polish and Mandarin are also largely similar. In addition, suggestions were made to improve their pronunciation teaching. The thesis ends with suggestions for further research related to the subject of the thesis and its extension with a contrastive analysis of other language and dialect pairs, for example Chinese and Polish dialects.
