Lexical Translation Under The Guidance Of Catford's Translation Theory

Due to differences in word order,voice and meaning between English and Chinese,translators should pay attention to them and avoid the problem of hard translation or even mistranslation during the process of E-C translation.As the basic unit of English,"word" has a wide range of meanings.And there are many parts of speech and grammatical structures in English,it is particularly important to apply the Translation Equivalence to word meaning selection,so as to achieve the basic equivalence between English and Chinese,and to apply the Translation Shift Theory to language transformation so as to make the translation more fluent.This article will be presented as a translation practical report.Original text of translation is excerpted from A History of Belgium: from the Roman Invasion to the Present Day,published in 1921 and written by Emile Cammaerts,a Belgian writer and poet.The book is about the history and culture of Belgium with 29 chapters.This practical report extracts Chapters11 to 20 as translation material.The first part of practical report introduces the research background and its important value.Chapter Two then briefly describes the process of translation.And Chapter Three introduces Catford's theory of translation:Translation Equivalence and Translation Shift Theory.The fourth chapter analyzes the proper nouns and special vocabulary involved in original text with the help of Translation Equivalence,and the vocabulary transformation phenomenon with Translation Shift Theory,and then sums up corresponding translation skills.Chapter Five is the conclusion.The purpose of practical report is to use scientific translation theory as a means to help the Chinese version reproduce the history completely,accurately and objectively,and to promote the in-depth study of Belgian history.
