With the increasingly frequent international exchanges and China's "going out" and "bringing in" policy,a large number of excellent translators are needed in the field of politics, economy, society, culture and so on.Translation ability is a kind of comprehensive language application ability.A good translation needs the translator having solid knowledge about vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure in the brain. This kind of basic knowledge can be activated and applied in translation.Besides, the translator needs to combine context, stylistics and culture on the basis of translation theory.A good translation can be considered as transformation of two language including the factors above.A certain language and culture foundation is necessary in cultivation of translation ability. After years' English learning,it is time for high school students to contact with the knowledge about translation.Their translation ability can be developed with correct guidance. The connotation of translation ability has not been correctly interpreted, which results in a marginal position of cultivation of translation ability in high school.Through the survey, this thesis tries to get a general idea about the present level of high school students' translation ability and the status of its cultivation. After observing the deficiencies in translation ability and obstacles in developing it,the writer aims at putting up with some effective suggestions to improve translation teaching. The writer intend to inspire more possible solutions to existing problems in cultivation of translation ability. The thesis is supported by Nida's functional equivalence theory. It is very influential in the field of translation and subverts the traditional concept of translation. It points that translation can not be restricted by the form. The culture of two language is different.Too much focus on the form can lead to poor conversion of meaning. What the translator should do is to find the most natural expression to help readers understand.A good translation can convey the original content between the lines.First of all,the writer made a preliminary test on the high school students who were taught during the internship by using the translation test of the national English proficiency competition for middle school students, and then analyzed the problems existing in the students' translation expression. The deficiencies in the translation ability of senior high school students reflected inthe test. Then the writer conducted interviews to explore the difficulties encountered by students and tried to find out the reasons from the teaching and learning activities such as time, methods and consolidation exercises of translation learning so as to analyze the problems in cultivating of translation ability. To understand the subjective attitudes and causes of problems in the teaching and learning activities, the writer took this as the basis for proposing solutions, results analysis and suggestions. The results show the following facts: translation of senior high school students has such problems as wrong diction, lexical meaning error, collocation error, improper sentence structure and failure of translation of information. They indicate that students' grasp of lexical meaning is not comprehensive, lexical collocation is not proficient, and the resolution and recombination of syntactic structure is not flexible. The reason is that teachers and students do not have a good understanding of translation, and there are problems in methods, time and strategies in translation teaching. Therefore, this paper mainly puts forward suggestions from the perspectives of translation learning, teaching methods, teaching time, learning strategies and the development of teachers' professional ability. It includes the following points: establishing correct attitudes towards translation learning and translation ability;strengthening the contrastive teaching between English and Chinese in order to improve translation ability on the basis of understanding cultural differences;diversifying the teaching modes and making full use of various resources such as the Internet to enhance the interest in translation learning;offering elective courses of to teach translation skills on the basis of textbook.
