The Floating Population's Sense Of Home And Its Practice

Since the 1990 s,driven by the "cultural turn" and "emotional turn",geography of home has become an important research field of social cultural geography.Under the background of globalization,the mobility of home has increasingly become a hot topic in the new cultural geography.Most western academic studies on home are based on qualitative case studies in the context of international migration,while few are based on systematic analysis of the background of Chinese population mobility.Along with the rapid development of social economy and urbanization,the massive domestic migration has become the normal phenomena in China.Spatial dislocations and geographic variance exert widespread and far-reaching influence on the perception of "home" of floating population.As a significant part of the sense of place,sense of "home" refers to the emotional connection established by the interaction between individuals and places,which is according with the people oriented idea of new pattern urbanization.This study not only draws on domestic and foreign research findings,but also bases itself on China's social situation.Taking Fuzhou as the research area,based on the methods of questionnaire survey,in-depth interviews and participatory observation,from the three perspectives of emotion,cognition and behavior,this paper analyses the characteristics and group differences of sense of "home",then probes into the cognitive mechanism and the practice of "making home" of the floating population in the destination city.The findings of the paper include:(1)The space experience of the floating population includes positive and negative emotion with hierarchy and complexity.There are significant differences in the sense of home among members of the floating population with different ages,martial status,educations,contract terms,housing types,major contact objects,mobility time distances,mobility time,residence time,mobility purposes and family mobility modes.Producing the sense of home in the destination city can effectively improve the willingness of them to settle down.(2)The formation and construction of home have been influenced by various factors involving in subjective and objective sources.First of all,the "Laojia" complex plays a foundational role.With the increase of mobility,the state of multilocal living blurs the cognition of home.In addition,the social network,the housing nature and living environment,city experience andinstitutional environment of destination cities also play important roles in the process of construction."Home" in the cognition of floating population is the aggregation of physical space and emotional space.(3)Floating population have the ability and means to help create their homes.They play an active role in this process in variety of ways such as integrating emotional elements into material space,highlighting the value of members in family relations,maintaining and expanding social relations or recalling and imaging the past.
