A Translation Report On The Giver Of Stars (Excerpt)from The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

In today’s society,with the gradual deepening of exchanges between various countries and nations,cultural exchanges and integration are becoming more and more frequent.In this context,there is still a traditional way of cultural exchange--literature.This is a translation practice report,using the first three chapters of the historical novel "The Giver of Stars" by a British writer Jojo Moyes as the translation material,based on the American translation theorist Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Based on the translator’s Chinese translation of "The Giver of Stars",the application of functional equivalence theory in the translation of historical novels is discussed.The author based on American history,recreating the history of the "Library on Horse" during the Great Depression in the form of a novel.The novel describes the perseverance of the hardy women in pursuing knowledge in a special period under the background of that era.This report applies translation theory to practice,and analyzes specific examples of lexical equivalence and syntactic equivalence.The translator explored some relevant translation strategies to make the translation more in line with the reading habits of target readers.For the novel’s language is rich,and the plot is delicate,the characters are vivid,besides,historical novels are based on historical facts.Therefore,in the practice of translating novels,it is particularly important to accurately reproduce the original content to achieve the purpose of functional equivalence.This report consists of five chapters: introduction to the translation task,theoretical frame,description of translation process,case analysis and conclusion.The translator hopes that this report will be helpful for the translation and research of similar texts.
