A Report On E-C Translation Of Popular Science Texts Under The Guidance Of Text Typology

In recent years,the public’s knowledge and literacy has been continuously improved and popular science texts are well-received by the public with simple expressions,explaining profound theories.However,for a large number of foreign popular science articles and books,only some of them have Chinese translations so that there are still input gaps in foreign popular science texts.Therefore,it is imperative to introduce some excellent foreign popular science texts into our country,presenting different perspectives,diverse ways of thinking and solutions for the Chinese people.System Engineering & Design Architecture is a fascinating popular science book.It consists of seventeen chapters and the first three chapters have been excerpted and translated into a total of 11,000 Chinese characters.Through concise graphics and vivid text,it describes a concept that “everything is a system”.A seven sphere diagram with strong logic dimension is presented via the simple analysis and comparison,which can provide a new systematic solution for our daily learning,work and life.Meantime,combined with the linguistic characteristics of popular science texts,namely scientificity,popularity,literariness and humorousness,different translation methods have been unveiled in the dissertation.According to Newmark’s text typology,the text is mainly classified into three categories,including expressive text,informative text and vocative text.Therefore,different translation techniques and methods should be taken for different text types.For example,translation techniques of conversion and amplification can be adopted in expressive texts while translation methods of free translation and imitation can be applied in vocative texts and translation methods of zero translation and transliteration can be used in informative texts.Through this translation practice,the characteristics of popular science texts have been unveiled and the related knowledge of system engineering and design architecture has been learned.It is also proved that the text typology has very important practical guiding significance for the translation of popular science texts.Figure 0;Table 1;Reference 36.
