Compared with the translation of literary and applied texts,the translation of academic monographs is relatively less.The Functional Equivalence Theory proposed by Eugene Nida was first applied to the translation of cultural texts such as the Bible.Although many translators use Functional Equivalence Theory to guide translation practice,there are few examples that use it to guide the translation of academic monographs.This translation practice report will explore the application of Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the translation of academic monographs on cultural and historical topics.This report is an English-Chinese translation practice report.The texts used are Chapters one to three of the academic monograph The Etruscans written by archaeologist Lucy Shipley.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,this report analyses various problems that may be encountered in English-Chinese translation,and discusses corresponding translation strategies and solutions to these problems.Firstly,it introduces the background,purpose and significance of translation of academic monographs.After that,the task description is carried out from translation preparation,translation process and quality control.Then through case study,it discusses under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory how to realize Functional Equivalence from four aspects: lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence.In the case study,lexical equivalence includes the translation of proper nouns,terms and polysemes,syntactic equivalence includes the translation of passive sentences and the translation of long and complex sentences,and textual equivalence includes cohesion and coherence.Stylistic equivalence is achieved by retaining the rigorous and objective characteristics of academic monographs.The summary of this English-Chinese translation practice report is as follows: First,The Etruscans is an academic monograph on cultural and historical topics,and the spread of culture and history needs to make the readers‘ understanding as same as possible,which is consistent with the principle of Functional Equivalence Theory,so Functional Equivalence Theory can be used to guide the translation of The Etruscans.Second,for the translation of academic monographs on cultural and historical topics such as The Etruscans,the accurate translation of names of people and places is not only a difficulty but also the key point.We must fully verify and ensure the translation of names of people and places is accurate.Third,due to the rigorous and objective style of academic monographs and the fact that academic monographs are written by experts in relevant fields and used for academic exchanges,stylistic equivalence should also be paid attention to in the translation of academic monographs.Fourth,as academic monographs involve professional knowledge,translators of academic monographs should try their best to understand professional knowledge and make adequate preparation before translation.This translation practice is an attempt to apply the Functional Equivalence Theory to the translation of academic monographs,which can provide some references and suggestions for translation studies in the field of academic monographs and play a certain role in promoting academic and cultural exchanges.
