Inbound tourism is a sub-industry,which is not only of great importance for a nation to earn foreign exchange and offer job opportunities,but also of significance to balance the international trade and carry out tourism diplomacy.In recent years,the amount of inbound tourists in China has been increasing.However,the contribution rate of inbound tourism in Henan Province is not so high as it should have been,for lacking of inbound-tourist-oriented publicity and brand products,though Henan is rich in historical heritages and convenient in transportation.Some inbound tourists' misunderstandings and complaints in Lonely Planet China,the most influential travel guide,may help to explain the low contribution rate.In this report,Henan section in Lonely Planet China,the 15 th English edition printed by Lonely Planet press in 2017,is excerpted as a sample for English-Chinese(hereinafter referred to as E-C)translation and case study to discuss the difficulties encountered and translation strategies adopted in the process.This report starts with the text analysis,defines the Source Text(hereinafter referred to as ST)as a hybrid type,analyzes the extratextual and intratextual factors,traces out the emotional tendency and function of the text.And the strategies of reversion,division,conversion,repetition,amplification,omission,negation,etc.are adopted under the framework of Nida functional equivalence theory.In the case study,attentions are focused closely on representation of meaning,function and style in accordance to the emotional tendency and function of the ST,under the guidance of Nida's theory.Moreover,the practice of retaining discourse coherence & cohesion,English rhetorical effect and short words effect is fully discussed in the target language(hereinafter referred to as TL).Finally,some suggestions are presented in the last chapter,and the shortcomings and the direction of future efforts are listed out,so as to lay a good foundation to make progress theoretically and practically.The primary significance of this translation practice is to represent what the inbound tourists like or dislike,to what extent they misunderstand and why they complaint about Henan,to provide reference to policymakers in government and professionals in tourism industry.It is highly recommended for them to conduct demand analysis,design brands,improve service,build up a good image of Henan and promote discourse power in international tourism.Additionally,it is can also be referential for the guidebook E-C translation and tourism English majors.
