A Report On The C-E Translation Of Travel Around Yichun, Jiangxi Based On Functional Equivalence Theory (Excerpts)

Tourism is a sunrise industry which will never decline. With the improvement of people's living standards and consumption attitudes, tourism has become an important and indispensable part of people's life and entertainment. Known as a land of attractive resources and a birth place of creative minds and gifted talents, Yichun is a place with a long history,flourishing humanity and abundant tourism resources. It is worthwhile for the world to know Yichun. For overseas visitors, English translation of tourism texts is one of the main ways of understanding the Yichun's tourist attractions and an important part in advertising Jiangxi's culture and promoting the development of Jiangxi's tourism. However, various English versions of Chinese tourism texts are far from satisfactory, with a large number of problems. So it is urgent to improve the quality of translation of tourism texts.This thesis makes use of Nida's theory of functional equivalence to analyze the translated version of Travel around Yichun, Jiangxi, applying qualitative analysis, case study method, inductive approach, deductive approach and comparative study method. The main different characteristics of Chinese and English tourism texts and their reasons are analyzed in this thesis. Then, it makes a list of some common problems existing in translation and summarizes five main difficulties which translators will be confronted with in translation of tourism texts such as translation of names of scenic spots, translation of four-character phrases. Based on a great number of examples, the feasibility of application of major translation strategies, such as transliteration, omission, conversion, analogy, paraphrase, loan translation is proved in this thesis. Afterwards, it demonstrates that Nida's functional equivalence is feasible and suitable for C-E translation of tourism texts.In a word, the thesis is a good attempt for discussing the implementation of some common translation strategies in the translation of Travel around Yichun, Jiangxi, based on Nida's functional equivalence, and it testifies the important guiding role of the theory in translation of tourism texts. Meanwhile, through the case study of the translation of Travel around Yichun, Jiangxi, reference can be offered to other translators to improve the quality of China's tourism texts translation, which will make a contribution to exporting Chinese tourism resources.
