This is a report on the translation of the book Disappearing Acts: Gender,Power, and Relational Practice at Work. With the main methods of direct translation, indirect translation and reconstruction, the translation task strives for providing adequate understanding to the translated text and seeking coherence between the rigorous language and lively idioms.By analyzing and summarizing the difficulties of translation, this translation task aims to provide practical reference to the translation of social science text.Since the purpose of a social science text is to render practical information to readers,it is essential to consider readers’ cognition to relevant information. From the perspective of cognition, relevance translation theory stresses the contextual effect of the translated text and readers’ processing efforts, which has guiding significance for the translation task.Under the guidance of relevance translation theory, the analysis focuses on three dimensions. At the lexical level,to enhance the contextual effect of the translation, the focus is on the annotation of terminology, the interpretation of polysemous words, and the amplification of abstract nouns and pronouns. At the syntactic level, according to the idea of semantic reconstruction, the analysis focuses on the reconstruction of English passive sentences, static sentences, and long sentences. At the cultural level, the methods of naturalization and indirect translation are applied in translating idioms based on the cultural context and the cognitive environment of readers. The report consists of five chapters.Chapter one is task description, including a description of the translation project, the text, and the structure of the report.Chapter two is process description, which covers pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation.Chapter three introduces the theoretical basis——relevance translation theory.Chapter Four is case analysis, which is classified into the lexical level, syntactic level, and cultural level.Chapter Five is a summary of the translation task.
