| In the middle of the 20 th century,American modern art flourished in the international painting world.New York replaced Paris as the International Art Center. However, the development and role of European modernism in the United States at the early stage is still a problem to be further discussed, because it is related to the internal logic that the United States finally chose modernism as its cultural identity. The object of this paper is the pioneer Gallery "291",which appeared in New York in the early 20 th century. It took the lead in introducing and exhibiting European modern art in the special social and cultural context of the early 20 th century in the United States. It became the first port for the United States to peep into European modern art and effectively promoted the process of American native modern art. This paper attempts to discuss the acceptance and discourse transformation of "291" to European modern art in the context of its art history. The first group of "Pennsylvania Impressionists" who participated in the exploration of European modern art in the United States declined in 1915.At the same time, the rise of New York triggered artists’ more "radical" experiments on forms. The European modern art exhibition held in 291 played a very good role How does "291" display modern art,how does Stiglitz, the founder of the gallery, influence a group of artists to explore the form, how does "291" catalyze the attention and theoretical recognition of the American academic community to abstract art after the armory exhibition, and how the artists in the 1920 s responded to it,which eventually led to the birth of American Abstract Expressionism Problems to be solved. |
