The ancient murals in Hohhot include rock paintings, tomb murals and murals in the temple. This is not only a characteristic of the mural art development, but also a historical witness of the ethnic development in the region. The Hohhot area, located at the corner of the Yinshan Mountains, has deep historical and cultural heritage.Since ancient times,it has been a place where northern nomads and Han people live.Rock paintings are not only the sprout of the development of other art categories, but also the most direct source of the development of murals. The subject matter of Yinshan rock paintings is closely related to the living environment and habits of nomadic peoples.Since the Neolithic period, nomadic ancestors have lived here. They use rock paintings to record the scenes of production labor, blessings, and sacrifice activities. With the change of tribes on the Mongolian grasslands, during the Han Dynasty,Hohhot was the settlement of the Central Plains and nomadic peoples. The existing murals of the ancient tombs in Hohhot include the murals of the Helinger tomb and the murals of the Yuan Dynasty. The murals of the Herringle tomb in the Eastern Han Dynasty witnessed the exchanges between the inland people and the northern nomadic areas,as well as the integration of the cultures of the two places. With the development of nomadic tribes,Mongolian tribes have entered the arenaof history. While the Mongolian nations were fighting the Quartet, they accepted Tibetan Buddhist beliefs from Tibet and placed them in a respectable position. In the Northern Yuan Dynasty, after Tadhan Khan returned to the Shun Ming Dynasty,a naturalized city was established, which is now Hohhot, and many temples were established, and the murals of the temples flourished. The murals in the Zhaomiao Temple are not only a historical testimony of the Mongolians receiving Tibetan Buddhism, but also influenced by the artistic characteristics of the Han dynasty. They have three distinct artistic characteristics: Mongolian,Tibetan and Han.By comparing the mural subjects, figures, and line coloring in the three existing temples in Hohhot,it can be seen that Dazhao is most affected by the artistic features of Tibet, and Xi Lizhao attempts to have a distinctive Handi art feature.Zhao has retained the Mongolian artistic characteristics. Therefore, the murals in Zhaomiao Temple are not only the artistic product of the combination of politics and religion, but also the historical witness of cultural exchanges among multiple ethnic groups.Studying the evolution of the artistic features of ancient murals in Hohhot provides positive significance for the study of grassland art;grassland art is part of grassland culture, which also enriches the study of grassland culture. The evolution of the artistic features of the ancient murals in Hohhot has evolved based on the mutual exchange of multi-ethnic cultures, which has provided positivesignificance for the study of Chinese painting creation and art history research.
