With the development of economic globalization and culture diversification of the world,the role of cultural soft power is becoming more and more prominent in the international status.English,as an international language,has been regarded as the language that must be mastered in elementary education and even higher education in China.As an important part of language learning,reading has been widely concerned by teachers and students.Reading ability has been widely concerned by many factors,such as language ability,reading strategy,emotional factors,learning motivation,etc.,so increasing cultural background knowledge plays an important role in improving students’ reading ability,broadening students’ vision,forming cultural self-confidence,and even establishing correct outlook on life and values.The author explored junior middle school students’ attitudes towards cultural background knowledge and the methods their teachers applied to deal with cultural background knowledge in reading teaching through questionnaire,interview and classroom observation,and found that junior middle school English teachers have begun to realize the importance of cultural background knowledge teaching,but the actual practice is inconsistent with the awareness,and there are still deficiencies in teaching methods.Students do not have adequate knowledge of cultural background,and they do not have the awareness and motivation to learn cultural background knowledge actively.This paper puts forward some suggestions from the aspects of strengthening teachers’ own cultural accomplishment,fully excavating teaching material culture,fully arousing students’ learning enthusiasm,and making good use of the teaching and network resources around them.We hope to change the current situation of cultural background knowledge teaching to a certain extent,improve students’ interest and motivation in learning English national culture,help them to conduct incidental learning in the limited time and the burden of heavy school work,improve the utilization rate of teaching materials and books inside and outside the class,and fully tap the connotation knowledge.As the guide of teaching,teachers should improve their own cultural accomplishment first,at the same time,they should also give students correct guidance and expand their background knowledge to improve their comprehensive language ability. |
