Reading comprehension is an important goal and a basic skill in language learning.Reading comprehension accounts for almost 30 percent of the score of college entrance examination English papers.Reading teaching is an important part of high school English teaching.However,for a long time,inefficient and time-consuming phenomena in middle school English reading teaching have been common.Although some teachers spend a lot of energy on the teaching of reading,the result is often disappointing because they focus more on the language content itself and pay too much attention on vocabulary and grammar.They think that students can understand the whole article without any difficulty as long as they master vocabulary and grammar.The practice of reading teaching shows that many problems in students’ reading comprehension do not lie in the language knowledge itself,but in their background knowledge.Reading is an active process of thinking,understanding and receiving information.Based on the Schema theory,this study asked 120 students to fill out a questionnaire to get some information about the current reading teaching.An experiment was carried out in two classes to explore and verify some reading strategies.This paper explores the teaching strategies of integrating background knowledge into reading teaching effectively,and examines the effectiveness of reading teaching strategies from different perspectives so as to improve students’ reading comprehension ability.This article introduced some theories about cultural background knowledge as well as Schema theory through combining with pertinent literature in domestic and abroad;Sort out the relationship between language and culture and the reading models of Schema theory,which provides the theoretical basis for the study.Interview 120 students through a questionnaire to understand the current situation of culture introduction in senior high school English reading teaching and the recognition of the importance of cultural background knowledge.Then carry out some specific strategies and methods of introducing cultural background knowledge and verify effectiveness of these strategies by pre-measure and after-measure.Last,make some suggestions for English reading teaching in senior high schools.Through these methods including preview before class,self-guided learning paper,vocabulary learning and multimedia display,teachers can introduce cultural background knowledge effectively;Introducing cultural background knowledge in reading teaching can increase the richness of classroom teaching and cultivate students’ intercultural communication ability.
