A Report On The Translation Of Academic English For Agriculture And Forestry(Unit 2,4,6,8)

This report analyzes mistranslation cases and makes a conclusion about them.It is based on the English-Chinese translation of four units(2,4,6,8)of Academic English for Agriculture and Forestry,which is one of the English Textbook Series for New Engineering Major,ranging from ecosystem,agriculture and forestry,chemistry to geography.When translating,the translator has kept revising the translation and,in the end,summarizes the problems in five aspects:1.Inappropriate choice of words.Both general words and specific terms cannot be accurately translated without the guidance of context;2.Constraints from original text.This report discusses how to break the frame of the original text to generate smooth translation from the four perspectives: part of speech,subject,word order and long sentence;3.Misreading.Lack of understanding or carelessness will result in misreading and thus mistranslating;4.Problems in expression.The report discusses how to reach expressiveness,accuracy and even aesthetics through adjusting the punctuation and words organizing;5.Unconformity in style.Being scientific is the keynote of this material,which requires formal tone of language and avoids subjective sense and colloquial expressions.This translation practice helps the author learn certain basic knowledge of agriculture and forestry and the corresponding English expressions,as well as the characteristics of this kind of text.Moreover,the language and searching ability are improved as well.This translation can be a supplement for agriculture and forestry translation,which provides a certain new translation of some English expressions.
