A Report On The Translation Of Grandpa's Mountain From English To Chinese(Chapter 1 To Chapter 7)

Grandpa's Mountain is a children's fiction with growth as its theme and real history as its subject.This type of growth novel is often referred to by critics as “the epitome of society”.The interpretation of the growth novel is actually an interpretation of that period of history.Introducing excellent foreign children's literature works into China is of great significance for children to understand a foreign culture,enrich their knowledge,cultivate their creativity and diverse aesthetic concepts.The translation of children's literature works could not only provide Chinese children's novelists with more abundant materials and more creative ideas and but also enrich the existing research on the translation of children's literature.The author selects the first seven chapters of Grandpa's Mountain for translation practice.Under the guidance of Chesterman's Norms Theory,this report mainly discusses how to choose translation strategies and techniques from the syntactic and semantic and pragmatic levels to restore the source text to the maximum extent and make it understood and accepted by children readers.The author believes,syntactically and semantically,colloquial words and phrases can be used in children's novel translation,and reduplication can be used appropriately.The sentence structure could be simplified and divided as far as possible to reduce the difficulty of translation comprehension.In terms of pragmatics,it is necessary to restore the blank of textual meaning caused by the cultural differences between China and the United States,and to realize the cross-cultural communication on the basis of truthfully transmitting the source text information.The author hopes that Chinese children will have a better understanding of foreign children's literature through this translation,and also hopes that the report will provide some help and inspiration for the translation of children's novels.
