As the cradle of Confucian culture,the Temple,Mansion and Cemetery of Confucius attract a number of foreign tourists every year.Thus,the demand for the translation of San Kong materials is also increasing.The translation quality not only directly affects foreign tourists' interest,but also damages the image of San Kong.Therefore,the author believes that it is of great practical significance to study the translation of San Kong materials.Visiting the Temple,Mansion and Cemetery of Confucius: A Holy Land of Culture in the East was written by Yang Chaoming.Under the guidance of skopos theory,the author has translated the first chapter of the book.According to skopos theory,the purpose of translation should be primarily taken into consideration during the translation.Then,translators adopt appropriate translation methods based on the purpose.The translation purpose of San Kong is to provide foreign tourists with the detailed tourism information and help them understand the historical and cultural background,so as to arouse their interests in visiting San Kong.Vermeer considers that the target reader is one of the most important factors determining the purpose of the translation.Therefore,the author focuses on the target readers in translation process and takes target readers' reading habits and expectations into consideration to ensure that the target text can be accepted by foreign readers.The report analyzes some difficulties encountered in the translation project from the lexical level and syntactic level.To be specific,names ofscenic spots are translated through transliteration plus explanation and free translation;four-character phrases are translated through literal translation and omission;for reign titles,temple names and posthumous titles,omission and transliteration plus explanation are adopted;non-subject sentences are handled by adding a appropriate subject;for long sentences,division and reconstructing are employed.It is hoped that this report can provide reference for the translation of related materials.
