The information age of the 21 st century requires people to be able to selectively and quickly extract the information they need through analysis, evaluation, and synthesis in complex and diverse information and knowledge. Therefore, critical reading is receiving more and more attention from scholars at home and abroad.Existing research literature indicates that, although the relevant theories and teaching modes of critical reading are quite mature, critical reading mainly explores college students and urban high school students, there are few empirical examples of critical reading in rural senior high schools. This study attempts to carry out critical reading in rural senior high school areas, and explores the impact of critical reading on English reading interest and reading ability of rural senior high school students, with the hope to arousing teachers' and students' understanding of critical reading in rural senior high school areas, and thus to cultivate students' critical reading skills and critical thinking. The innovation of this research lies in the subject of rural senior high school students and reading test papers adopted in the experiment. The test paper of this research adds a new question type of “Five out of Seven” for reading comprehension of the National College Entrance Examination.“Five out of Seven” pays more attention to the connection of texts, the summary of texts and the deep meaning of the full text. The choice of this question type makes the experimental results more convincing. This research is mainly based on the theory of “constructivism” and “critical discourse analysis”.Try to explore the following two questions: 1)What is the effect of critical reading on students' English reading interest in rural senior high schools? 2)What is the effect of critical reading on students' English reading proficiency in rural senior high schools? In this study, two classes in a rural senior high school in ChangNing County,Hengyang City were chosen as the experimental subjects.Among them,Senior High School Class 14 was an experimental class, and critical reading was used.Senior High School Class 15 was a control class, using traditional reading methods. In the experiment, the author collected data both on the English reading scores and the questionnaire survey results before and after the experiment in the experimental class and the control class, using SPSS 25.0 software for statistics analysis. The independent sample T test and paired sample T test were used to the data analysis.Through the experiment, this study finds that compared with traditional English reading: 1)Critical reading can significantly improve the English reading interest of experimental class students, and make students gradually enjoy English reading classes.2)Critical reading can significantly improve the English reading scores of experimental students and further improve their English reading comprehension ability. This study provides some enlightenments for senior high school English reading teaching: Firstly, teachers should lay emphasis on the development of students' reading skills.Secondly,it is necessary for teachers to teach students according to their aptitude, and to be good at setting interesting and inspiring reading activities according to the reading text so that students can not only understand deeply in reading text, but also increase their interest in English reading.Thirdly, teachers should strengthen the training of critical reading so that students can consciously apply critical reading skills to English reading.Although this study proves that there are many benefits of critical reading, there are also some shortcomings that need to be further explored and improved.Because this experiment is only carried out in the class taught by the author, the time is short, and the reading ability and interests of students may be affected by other aspects. Therefore,it is necessary that more students need to be taught critical reading and the research should be conducted from various aspects and factors affecting students' reading ability and interest...
