After the war of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom,Suzhou’s gardens were destroyed.In order to restore the former scene,local literati and gentry began to rebuild private gardens.They continued the daily activities of poems,appreciation of painting and calligraphy,and elegant garden meetings of Wumen sages in the Ming Dynasty,and displayed the rich life of gentry in Jiangnan.Gu Wenbin,the owner of The Garden of Harmony,was a typical example.As the patriarch of the Gu’s family,Gu Wenbin beared all the responsibilities.He concerned his family and was strict to his younger generation about the education,which showed his family’s harmonious and loving relationship and aspiring family style.Gu Wenbin,while taking into account his family,was committed to his duties.During his tenure in Ningshao taidao,Zhejiang Province,he did not slack off in dealing with daily government affairs.Gu Wenbin was a qualified official in his position and politics.In his spare time,Gu Wenbin’s main life contents were calligraphy and painting collection,drinking and communication,playing cards and elegant garden meetings.Gu Wenbin’s family life,government life and leisure life constituted an integral whole and complemented each other.The huge income of government life not only improved the family living standard,but also laid a material basis for the collection activities.At the same time,Gu Wenbin used the collection of Guoyunlou to cultivate the younger generation carefully,which made the family ethos that collection improve study,was well inherited,which in turn promoted the development of the collection activities.In addition,through the leisure activities such as drinking and communication,playing cards and elegant garden meetings,Gu Wenbin’s friends had formed a huge social network,which provided collection resources for the development of collection activities.
