| The Chinese translation of Stolen in the Night is the research object of this translation practice report.It is written by Gary C.King,a famous American novelist,and was published on February 6,2007.The main content of the book is about a mysterious murder and the investigation of two missing children in Idaho.It introduces the whole process of American police investigating the case and tracking down the real murderer,as well as all kinds of help and actions provided by the government and people all walks of life,highlighting the reflection of the whole society and government departments based on this case.The first ten chapters of this book,about 10000 words in total,introduce the historical and cultural background of Idaho and part of the investigation.Considering that the original is a documentary novel and the characteristics of literature translation,the author chooses Eugene Nida’s theory of functional equivalence with reader-oriented principle as a guide to translate Stolen in the Night(excerpt)into Chinese for Chinese readers to read,and discusses the usage of “functional equivalence” in literary translation practice from lexical equivalence and syntactic equivalence.This translation report is divided into four parts.The first part describes the translation project,including the source of the translation project,the introduction of the translation project and the meaning of the translation project;the second part introduces the whole translation process and functional equivalence theory in detail;the third part classifies and analyzes cases in detail according to functional equivalence theory;the fourth part summarizes the translation practice.However,“the analysis of translation case” is the core content of this report.The author mainly uses the translation techniques of word meaning extension,conversion,sentence combination,attributive clauses,passive sentences,and annotation to analyze the translation difficulties from the lexical and syntactic levels in the typical cases.The author fully realizes that a qualified translator should not only have a high level of English but also have a solid foundation of Chinese,select a text that is within their capabilities,and carefully proofread the translation to avoid some silly mistakes.In the future translation practice,the author will keep the lessons in mind,and flexibly apply the experience learned in this translation practice to do a good job in translation. |
