English reading ability is one of the most important abilities in English language learning.The cultivation of reading ability has always been highly valued in English teaching.Many high school English teachers analyze and comment text just at the language knowledge level.They pay more attention to the translation of articles and the teaching of language points.The classes are boring which make students lose interest in English reading.This traditional teaching method can’t effectively improve students’ English reading ability.Now the New National English Curriculum Standards for General High School has a high level of requirements for English reading teaching,which not only focus on the mastery of language knowledge points,but also on cultivation of students’ genre awareness.Therefore,in recent years,genre-based teaching approach comes into being,and gradually many English teachers pay more attention to this teaching method.Genre-based teaching approach is a teaching method which is based on the schematic structure of text.It applies genre theory and genre analysis theory to teaching activity.It provides a new perspective and lays a theoretical foundation for English teaching in high school.In high school English reading teaching,genre-based teaching approach makes high school students pay attention to the structure,rhetoric and linguistic characteristics of different genres.By using this teaching method,high school English teachers can provide a structure that is different from the traditional teaching structure for English reading courses,which can help students master the main idea and genre characteristics of different texts,and improve their English thinking quality and reading ability.Genre-based teaching approach has attracted the attention of many domestic scholars and researchers.This paper is mainly to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of genre-based teaching approach in senior high school English reading teaching.In this paper,the author answers the following questions by conducting a teaching experiment:1.How does genre-based teaching approach cultivate students’ genre analysis ability?2.How should teachers use genre-based teaching approach effectively in senior high school English reading teaching?3.What effects does genre-based teaching approach have on students’ English reading ability?The author conducts a teaching experiment for a semester,which is carried out in two classes of senior one in Kuang Qu senior high school in Xinmi.Class three is experimental class.The total number of students is 53,in which the genre-based teaching approach has been used.Class six is control class.The total number of students is 53,in which the traditional teaching method has been used.By analyzing the results of the tests,questionnaires and interview,this paper explores the effect and function of genre-based teaching approach in English reading teaching in senior high school.Before the experiment,the author conducts a pre-test to learn about students’ reading proficiency and the difference of students’ reading performance in two classes.And the post-questionnaire is used to know the reading interests,reading strategies,genre knowledge and genre awareness of students.After the experiment,the author conducts a post-test to investigate the changes of students’ reading performance in two classes.The post-questionnaire is used to understand the reading interest,reading strategies,genre knowledge and genre awareness of students.Then the author analyzes and discusses the collected data.The results of the study show that: after the experiment,the students’ reading scores in experimental class are improved obviously,which indicates that students’ English reading ability in experimental class has been improved.Besides,the results of questionnaires and interview show that: after the experiment,the students in experimental class are generally satisfied with genre-based teaching approach that can stimulate students’ interest and confidence in English reading.Through the explanation and exercises of different genres,genre-based teaching approach can not only cultivate students’ genre awareness and genre analysis ability,but also improve students’ English reading ability.Therefore,genre-based teaching approach can be used effectively in senior high school English reading teaching. |
