English reading teaching is an important part of senior high school English teaching.Reading is the most important way for students to acquire knowledge.Good reading not only expands the students' knowledge,improves the language level,and obtains the necessary information,but also helps students analyze and solve problems independently,and develops the students' self-learning and lifelong learning abilities.Besides,reading accounts for a large proportion of the college entrance examination.The ability of reading has largely determined the performance of English learning.The traditional English reading teaching method are of great help to students' mastery of the linguistic knowledge,such as vocabulary and grammar,but it has limited effect on improving students' interest and efficiency in English learning.The main reason is that the teaching contents in traditional English reading class are not closely related to students' interests and needs,and the contents are out of the authentic situation.Students lack the motivation to learn English and can hardly achieve the expected performances.Content-Based Instruction(CBI)is a foreign language teaching approach that focuses on both content and language.On the basis of comprehensible input,it emphasizes that teaching should be content-centric,combines content with students' interests and needs,focuses on topics or themes,and uses authentic reading materials to create real language situation,enables students to actively and effectively participate in learning.It shifts the focus of teaching from the knowledge of language to content,makes language learning no longer the goal but a tool for obtaining content knowledge,and pays attention to the use and function of language,thus reduces students' learning anxiety to improve self-confidence,so as to achieve better learning results.CBI has received extensive attention from foreign language teaching researchers at home and abroad.They have conducted in-depth researches on its theoretical foundations,models,and empirical aspects to confirm its effectiveness in foreign language teaching.However,the application researches of CBI in China are concentrated in the higher education stage,and there are not many studies on basic education.Therefore,this study aims to apply CBI to senior high school English reading teaching,and tries to testify whether CBI has a positive impact on students' academic performance,reading ability and attitude.The research questions to be answered are the following:1.What are the effects of CBI on students' performance of English reading?2.What are the effects of CBI on students' attitude towards English reading teaching?3.What are the effects of CBI on students' English reading ability?The experimental subjects are 75 students from two parallel classes,class 11 and class 12,in a senior high school in Zhengzhou,and the experiment lasts for 13 weeks.Among them,class 11 is an experimental class(EC),which applies CBI to English reading teaching;Class 12 is a control class(CC),which is taught in the traditional English reading teaching mode.Research instruments such as tests,questionnaires,interviews,and observations are used,and the data is analyzed by Excel and SPSS 22.0 software.The experimental research shows that CBI has a positive impact on the academic performance,reading ability and learning attitude of senior high school students.From the results of data analysis,it can be seen that through the application of CBI in English reading teaching,a large amount of authentic reading materials are provided,real reading situations are created,which can promote students' comprehensible input,expand vocabulary,and broaden the students' vision;through the content learning of different topics,in the process of generalization,inference,induction and guessing,the students' advanced reading strategies are cultivated,the efficiency and ability of reading are improved,and a good foundation is laid for their independent learning and lifelong learning;through the topic-based diversified theme activities,the enthusiasm for learning has been mobilized,and the students' interest in learning has been stimulated.Besides,the continuous strengthening of cultural background knowledge has reduced the difficulty of reading comprehension and enhanced students' reading motivation and self-confidence.In short,CBI has a positive effect on senior high school students' English reading.It is hoped that this research will play a supplementary role to the current teaching methods and provide references for future researches of CBI,so as to continuously promote the development of English reading teaching.
