| In the world of teaching Chinese characters,scholars have always debated the importance of the Chinese characters’ stroke order,some of them believe that the stroke order is very essential to the process of studying Chinese characters,while others believe that if students can master the ability to write correct characters without having to rely on the stroke order and respect its rules,then that would be enough and acceptable too.When it comes to the stroke order studies,scholars have not come to an agreement on whether or not the stroke order really help students with their Chinese characters’ studies,that is where this thesis comes,the aim of this thesis is to conduct a survey about the importance of Chinese characters’ stroke order and its effects on other Chinese character abilities;whether or not mastering the Chinese characters’ stroke order affects the students’ ability to recognize and read characters,and whether or not it affects their ability to write characters correctly.This research conducted two surveys,the first one was to test the combined Chinese characters’ abilities of foreign learners compared to their mastering of the Chinese characters’ stroke order,then comparing statistically whether mastering the Chinese characters’ stroke order is interrelated with the students’ ability to recognize and read characters,and their ability to write characters correctly.The second survey was choosing from the above-mentioned tests a few students with high Chinese characters’ abilities,and a few with low Chinese characters’ abilities and conduct an interview with them.The aim of the interview is to investigate more the relationship between both abilities;whether or not those students with high Chinese character’ abilities have paid attention to the Chinese characters’ stroke order during the process of learning Chinese and vice versa.The statistical conclusions were as follows: 1.Mastering the Chinese characters’ stroke order and students’ ability to recognize and read characters are interrelated.2.Mastering the Chinese characters’ stroke order and students’ ability to write correctly are interrelated.3.Many of the students who did not work on their Chinese characters’ stroke order studies encountered many problems in their general understanding of Chinese characters. |
