A Report On English Translation Of The Liugong Island's Tourist Attractions

The Liugong Island is a distinctive scenic spot in Weihai,Shandong Province,and translation of its tourist attractions provides foreign tourists an important access to the places of interest on this island.According to the translation contract(2016.6-2018.6)signed by Management Committee of the Liugong Island and the School of Translation Studies,the author participated in the Chinese-English translation of new exhibits on Liugong Island under the guidance of her supervisor.The texts translated total 14,392 Chinese characters,including Brief Introduction of the Liuogng Island,Introduction of the Sino-Japanese War Museum,The Beiyang Naval Admiral's Headquarters,Preface,and Introduction of the Taiwan Serow,the Formosan Sika Deer and Pere David s Deer.In conformity with the translation contract,the translation firstly ensures the accuracy of the information and the readability of the target text.On the basis of the actual features of tourist texts and with reference to Newmark's Text Typology and translation strategies,this translation pays attention to the communicative effect of the texts so as to achieve the purpose of spreading culture.Based on the characteristics of tourist materials,the author divides the materials into two parts:the tour guide presentation and the scenic spots text in the cases analysis.The tour guide presentation is characterized by use of popular language,conciseness and logicality,and on-the-site effect,which needs to be reproduced as much as possible in the translation.The scenic spots text that is valued for objective information is translated with faithful presentation of objective information,paraphrase of unique Chinese terms and supplement of background information.As the first version of the new exhibits on Liugong Island,this translation has originality and practical value.Hopefully,this translation report will be of reference value for the translation of tourist texts.
