English tourism signs play a significant role in tourist attractions as they guidethe foreigners to conduct their sightseeing and learn about the culture of the attractions.Whereas a number of English versions of Chinese public signs in tourist attractions arefar from satisfaction with translating problems and errors existing, so the translationscan not effectively convey the intended function of the original Chinese public signs.Therefore the C-E translation of public signs in tourist attractions deserves an in-depthstudy. Reiss’ text typology offers academic and systematic guidance for the translationof public signs in tourist attractions. According to Reiss’ text typology, public signs intourist attractions can be mainly categorized into three types: the informative,expressive and operative and each one requires different translation strategies. Basedon Reiss’ text typology, this thesis first explores functions of the three types of publicsigns in Jinsixia tourist attraction; then it analyzes the translation problems existing inthis tourist attraction; finally in accordance with the analysis of public sign functionsand translation problems, it puts forward some translation strategies. The translationstrategies “borrowing” and “commutative translation” should be employed intranslating informative public signs,“semantic translation” should be used intranslating expressive public signs,“borrowing” and “imitating” are supposed to beused in translating appellative public signs. The study result can be a guidance insolving public sign translation problems in Jinsixia tourist attraction, hence improvethe translation quality; meanwhile the translation strategies proposed in the paper canbe used as reference for the translation of public signs in other tourist attractions.
