| In recent years,suspense and detective novels introduced from foreign countries have been popular among Chinese readers.Sensation novel is a genre seen nowadays as the precursor to suspense and detective fiction,which has made great effect on the modern suspense and detective fiction and offered valuable material for modern suspense and detective fiction.William Wilkie Collins is acclaimed as “a master of suspense” and the father of sensation novel,and his works have received great attention.William Wilkie Collins has contributed to developing English fiction in terms of writing technique.Therefore,the translation of his work is of great significance.This is a translation report based on the work of William Wilkie Collins,The Black Robe.The author of the report translated the first six chapters of the text story,about 11000 English words.It hasn’t been translated into Chinese version so far.In the process of translation,with the Reception Theory as the theoretical framework,the paper focuses on the translation difficulties in terms of lexical and syntactical levels.Based on the case study,corresponding translation strategies and methods of The Black Robe are analyzed and summarized to provide lessons and experiences for translating this type of literature in the future.The conclusion can be drawn through case study: On lexical level,class shifts is employed to make target text concise and to the point.At the same time,the proper use of four-character structure can meet the aesthetic needs of the target readers.On syntactical level,the amplification is adopted to supplement the omitted message,while the omission is applied to deal with the redundant part of the sentence by taking target readers’ acceptability of literary works into account.Besides,in E-C translation,sentence structure should be adjusted to satisfy target readers’ reading habits for sake of their horizon of expectation. |
