In ancient times,civilization originated along fertile river basins;in agricultural times,people lived along rivers for irrigation;in the industrial age,human beings sought resources from nature for the socio-economic development rapidly.Water,an essential factor supporting life,was withdrawn rapidly in industrial age.Meanwhile,the urban water system developed well gradually for providing safe drinking water to urban residents efficiently and protecting the water environment.In the book of Modernization and Urban Water Governance——Organizational Change and Sustainability in Europe,the writer analyzes the characteristics of the modernization of urban water systems in Europe,surrounding three ideal types in Germany,France and England.Such characteristics as mature sanitation,high prices of water and privatization in water sector can be a model for the other countries.This paper consists of two parts:the first part is the translation and the second part is a translation report.The source text is an informative text,being from the book Modernization and Urban Water Governance—Organizational Change and Sustainability in Europe(Chapter 2),written by Thomas Bolognesi,a senior researcher at the University of Geneva.This chapter gives the definitions of urban water system and its modernization,and analyzes the shock of modernization on urban water system.Also,features of this system and case studies on German,French and English ideal-types are included in it.The translation report mainly consists of four parts.Firstly,it gives an introduction to the purpose and significance of the translation practice.Secondly,it analyzes such characteristics of source text as lots of terminologies and passive voice.Thirdly,the description of the translation process and summary for the translation of passive voice and charts are presented.Finally,the translator analyzes some cases in the project to reveal the process of delivering the original message under the guidance of Catfords’ translation shifts.According to the translation project,we learn the construction and operation of urban water system in Europe,which can be a reference for Chinese governance in domestic urban water system and international rivers.Meanwhile,the analytical framework in the book can be used in other large infrastructure studies.Besides,the translator improves her professional capability and broadens her horizon in accordance with the translation project.
