In order to meet new challenges of the 21st century——the global development of science and technology,the quality of talents needs to be constantly improved.Countries around the world emphasize curriculum and teaching reform that center on core competence.The new curriculum reform in China also takes improving students'core competence as an important goal of basic education.The CPC proposed the idea of“strengthening morality education”,which was integrated into the curriculum standards by the proposal of“the Development of Core Competence of Students”.The Senior High School English Curriculum2017 clearly points out the purpose of learning a foreign language is not only to acquire language knowledge,but to promote the development of students'own values and to improve their comprehensive humanistic quality through learning foreign language and understanding foreign cultures.Therefore,it is an urgent mission to cultivate students'English core competence in high schools.To learn the current status of the cultivation of students'English core competence of senior high school,the author takes Linxian Senior High School of Lvliang,Shanxi province as an example to conduct a study.The research methods used in this thesis include literature research,questionnaire survey and interview.First of all,the author summarizes the concepts including competence,core competence,disciplinary core competence,English core competence through literature review.On the basis of it,4 dimensions of the specific contents of English core competence?language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality,learning ability?and the relevant researches abroad and at home are clarified.Secondly,the thesis discusses on the following 3 questions:?1?What's the current situation of cultivation of students'English core competence??including language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability??2?What are the factors influencing cultivation of students'English core competence??3?What corresponding suggestions can be adopted to cultivate students'English core competence?The following conclusions are drawn:?1?The overall cultivation of students'English core competence of Linxian Senior High School is not satisfying.There is an uneven development of 4 dimensions of English core competence,among which cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability are much weaker than language ability.From the perspective of grades,there are significant differences in language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.Students of grade 3 performs much better than grade 1and grade 2 in all dimensions.From the perspective of genders,there is no significant difference in language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.Whether male students or female students are all at a moderate state.Female students are slightly better than male students in language ability and learning ability,and male students are slightly better than female students for cultural awareness and thinking quality.?2?The main factors influencing the cultivation of students'English core competence include curriculum setting,teaching evaluation,teachers and students.?3?Based on the 4 influencing factors,the author puts forward some suggestions helping to improve the current situation of students'English core competence from aspects of administrative departments,schools,teachers and students respectively.
