A Report On The Translation Of Subtitles In Documentaries

As an important mass medium,film and television works provides new channels for people to understand the history,society and culture of different countries.The documentary takes real life as its theme and is displayed in front of the audience through the big screen and the Internet.It plays a very important role in the communication between Chinese and western cultures.In order to better convey the content of documentary,the study of subtitle translation has become a problem that cannot be ignored.Based on the subtitle translation of the documentary participated by the author,this report summarizes the basic requirements of subtitle translation according to the characteristics of subtitle text,analyzes the translation difficulties encountered in this work,and puts forward corresponding translation strategies for the translation difficulties.The purpose of this translation practice report is to provide some feasible suggestions for documentary subtitle translation.This report is composed of four parts:translation practice overview,subtitle translation overview,the case analysis and the summary and conclusion.The translation practice overview is a general introduction,which explains the background of the project,summarizes the research on subtitle translation by domestic and foreign scholars,and summarizes the content and requirements of the undertaking project.The overview of subtitle translation describes the definition of subtitle translation,and according to the characteristics of subtitle text and the research of domestic and foreign scholars,the basic requirements of subtitle translation are summarized as four points:accuracy,conciseness,popularity and coherence.The case analysis is the core part.It takes the documentary subtitle translation in which the author participates as the material,and analyzes the three difficulties encountered in translation,including time and space constraints,the relationship between intermediate text and subtitle text,and long difficult sentences.In order to meet the basic requirements of subtitle translation,four translation strategies are proposed:1.Simplify redundancy and highlight key information;2.Complete fuzzy information by combining pictures and texts;3.Reasonably rewrite to ensure smooth understanding;4.Do appropriate addition to keep the integrity of every single subtitle.The summary and conclusion part briefly summarizes the characteristics and strategies of subtitle translation,and expounds the author’s thoughts and points for improvement in the translation process.
