On C-E Simultaneous Interpreting Of Concluding Remarks Under Interpretive Theory Of Translation

Every conversation covers an end.Concluding remarks,being the sign of the end of verbal communication,make up a core part of the speech.It plays an important role in connecting the proceeding and summarizing the main idea of the speech,as well as consolidating the friendship established or maintained in the conference.Featuring polite expressions with Chinese characteristics,semantic repetition and redundant information,the interpretation of Chinese concluding remarks poses great challenges to simultaneous interpreters.Although some experts and scholars at home and abroad have made researches on the differences between Chinese and English farewells and on the reasons from the perspectives of polite expressions and its application,there are few studies on concluding remarks.Therefore,concluding remarks have been analyzed by combining the theory with practice,providing suggestions for their English interpretation.Based on the Interpretive Theory of Translation,the study focuses on the SI of concluding remarks in international conferences.The qualitative method is adopted in the thesis with A Coursebook of Simultaneous Interpretation published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press as the corpus.The Chinese and English concluding remarks of 56 speeches in the book have been analyzed.Their features and distinctions have been discussed from the perspective of linguistic and cultural differences.The translation process of the triangular model is introduced to summarize interpreting strategies,namely,syntactic linearity,anticipation and information integration,and cutting down redundancies,adjusting the tone and attitude of the speaker and polite expressions for adjusting cultural differences.We hope that the study may improve interpreter's abilities of information conversion,expression and coordination without any preparation.
