The Myth of Mars and Venus : Do Men and Women Really Speak Different Languages? is focused on gender and language. The translation material is extracted from Chapters Seven and Eight of this book.Chapter Seven describes women and men in politics and workplaces, and women are striving to break people’s stereotype towards them.Chapter Eight analyzes the relationship among gender, identity and style from the cultural perspective.Under the guidance of the translation strategy which combines literal translation and free translation, the translator strives to ensure translation smooth and fluent. The translation report mainly consists of four parts: introduction of translation tasks, description of translation process, case studies and a summary of translation practice. The translation tasks describe the significance and source of the selected material, profile of the book and a brief introduction of the author. The translation process covers the preparations before translation, difficulties encountered in the course and revision of the first draft. After the first draft is finished, combining with suggestions put forward by teachers and other classmates, the translator carefully corrects it from accuracy, readability and other aspects. As the core of this report, case studies are analyzed from lexis, syntax and discourse. This part provides practicable translation solutions in response to specific examples. The last part is a summary of this translation practice, including the translator’s reflection and the direction of future efforts.Terms of this report are listed in the appendix table.Through this translation practice, the translator profoundly recognizes the importance of adequate preparations before translation. It is necessary to search relevant information and enrich background knowledge by means of various online and offline tools. The translator has got a general understanding of studies on language and gender before translation, including the research process and theevolution of research methods. It is beneficial to promote the translation progress to some extent. In addition, for the translation of professional vocabularies and expressions, the translator must ask help for professional reference books. What’s more,a good command of Chinese and English languages is an inevitable skill for the translator.Appropriate translation methods and solutions should be selected based on writing styles, stylistic characteristics and other factors. The translation should be carefully conducted and revised to ensure its quality.
