Abstract/Summary:
The original text of this translation practice report is from the first four chapters of Five Pillars of the Mind: Redesigning Education to Suit the Brain. The text is about pedagogy. And the main content of the book is the author’s new philosophy of pedagogy that school courses can be redesigned according to “the five pillars”,which are symbols, patterns, order, categories and relationships. This book suggests that we should rethink education with pillar thinking, which may improve the condition of education and even have an impact on the whole society. As a whole, the book has rich examples and evidence, and its language is relatively terse with a majority of short sentences. However, the excerpt parts are more complicated because of a number of long and difficult sentences that make it hard to translate. In the case part, the translator summarizes the difficult points at vocabulary, syntax, discourse and rhetoric levels, combined with the analysis of selected cases.According to the specific context, the translator uses the combination of literal translation and free translation and adopts various translation techniques including literal translation, adaptation, changing the part of the speech, addition and omission of words, voice conversion and word order adjustment. The translation of the book gives new insights into educational reforms, has certain reference value for educators and it is helpful for readers to learn the new ideas on education from the west. The translator learns plenty of new knowledge through this translation practice, and clearly realizes the demanding nature of translation work as well as the high standards for translators. It also makes the translator deeply recognize the shortcomings and serves as a guide to go on working.
