An Analysis Of Aesthetic Representation In The Chinese Version Of Atonement From The Perspective Of Translation Aesthetics

Atonement is a novel written by the contemporary English novelist Ian McEwan,telling a story about love,sin and war.The writer,Ian McEwan,who has published many works and has been writing novels for nearly 50 years,is one of the most significant writers in the contemporary British literary world.Literary works are artistic and have the aesthetic values which cannot be ignored.Hence,the study of literary translation needs to consider from the perspective of aesthetics.Liu Miqin(2011)in An Introduction to Translation and Aesthetics systematically explained translation aesthetics,aesthetic translation and aesthetic reproduction,etc.Based on Liu Miqing's translation aesthetics and the numbers of achievements in translation aesthetics and literary translation studies,this paper aims to analyze the aesthetic reproduction in the translation of Atonement and then concludes the translation strategies adopted by the translator.In view of the differences between English and Chinese,especially in terms of words and sentences,this thesis compared the source text with its translation from the perspective of phonology,lexis and syntax.The analysis in this study lays emphasis on the form system of language.The researcher tries to find that: how the translation represented the aesthetic characteristics of the source text,what translation strategies adopted by the translator and what is the influence of the translators' strategies to aesthetic representation.The study found that translation strategies can influence the effect of aesthetic representation in some degree.The translator adopted mainly literal translation and imitation.The translator tended to use reduplicated words,four-character structures,mainly involving idioms,to represent the beauty of the source text in translation.But one cannot ignore that some Chinese expressions influence the quality of translation.
