As globalization continues to intensify and as China keeps enhancing its national comprehensive strength,China's development and its policies have attracted much more attention than ever before. The Belt and Road initiative(BRI),put forward by President Xi Jinping in the 18th National Congress and included in a series of President Xi's speeches, has been regarded as the strategic policy for China' development thereafter, and has been translated into English,French, and Arabic, etc. The BRI received strong echoes from such countries like the ones along the Belt and Road, though it also drew inevitable criticisms in some other counties.Misunderstandings between different nations about the BRI may impose unfavorable impacts on the implementation of China's the Belt and Road initiative as well as international collaborationsTaking both the Chinese and English versions of President Xi's addresses concerning BRI as its subject for research, the present thesis is intended to ascertain the substantial factors causing misunderstandings about the BRI and explore the appropriate approaches to bettering the translations of the BRI documents so to eliminate such misunderstandings during the process of translation from the perspective of pragmatics adaptation theoryWhile the BRI addresses reflect and highlight China's national political orientation as an official document, the BRI addresses used a high frequency of“four-character structures" and "six-character structure",a large number of quotations from Chinese Classics,a variety of long sentences marked by successively frequent use of commas, and a distinctive use of lexicons and syntactic structures reflecting President Xi's strong personal style. These characteristics may puzzle translators when the BRI addresses were translated,if the translators endeavored to retain the senses of the original as naturally as possible, and to work out the cultural peculiarities as appropriate as possible Viewed from adaptation theory perspective, much attention shall be paid to such elements like the differences in conventional use of languages, readers'expectations, cultural backgrounds, and etcAfter a systematic clarification of the stylistic and textual features of the BRI addresses, and a theoretical analysis of Jef Verschueren's adaptation theory, the present thesis suggested that pragmatic adaptation be of great importance to the translation of the political documents like the BRI addresses, and that such factors like the differences in the use of languages, readers' expectations, and cultural backgrounds be taken into account during translation. The present research indicates that such translation strategies as change the words order,omission,co-translation,and adaptation could be effective for the translation of the BRI addresses,as well as the documents with similar nature The research might lay a basis for future researches on the multilingual translation of the documents similar to the BRI addresses.
