Non-fiction literature is characterized by both authenticity and literariness.Chinese readers have gradually shown their interests in nonfiction which is an effective way to understand foreign cultures. However, nonfiction appeared relatively late.Nonfiction translation has not been studied deeply domestically, and few researches can provide translators with comprehensive translation guidance.Translators don't have sufficient understanding of nonfiction literature. Therefore, nonfiction literature translation needs to be explored. This report tries to discuss the translation strategy adoption in nonfiction literature with the case of the first two chapters of Dopesick: Dealers,Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America from the perspective of Chesterman's norm theory and to explore the applicability of the theory to nonfiction literary translation. From a macro perspective, translation decision-making process is affected by expectation norms and professional norms, the latter of which is further divided into the accountability norm, the communication norm, and the relation norm. From a micro perspective, the norm theory can provide translators with specific and feasible translation strategies from the three levels of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, which can solve the problems while translating. This report aims to explore how to find a balance between authenticity and literariness through appropriate translation strategies under the guidance of translation norms, overcome the differences between Chinese and English languages, improve readers' reading efficiency, and finally form translations that are easily accepted by Chinese readers.Through analysis, the author finds that Chesterman's norm theory can guide nonfiction translation. The author intends to explore the guiding significance and operability of norm theory to non-fiction literature, and provide references for nonfiction literature translation through this translation practice.
