Literal interpretation and deverbalization are two important strategies commonly used by interpreters. The literal interpretation strategy emphasizes retaining the structure and form of the original speech when interpreting it into another language, while the deverbalization strategy argues that interpreters should not be restricted by the forms of the source language. However, the misuse of the literal interpretation strategy would cause literalisms, and improper deverbalization may lead to a loss of the information and style of the original speech. Both problems will leave a negative impact on the interpreted speech and thus the interpretation quality will fall.Through a specific case study of Chinese-Russian consecutive interpretation, the author discusses the factors that cause the misuse of the two strategies in terms of logic, background knowledge, and note-taking.Then the author analyzes the errors which occurred in the case in detail.Based on the analysis, the thesis puts forward several interpreting skills that foreign interpreters can use during Chinese-Russian consecutive interpreting,as well as solutions for cultivating interpreting abilities. The author hopes this thesis can serve a reference for interpreters on dealing with the problem of misusing literal interpretation and deverbalization.
