Translation is an important component of military capability.Quality of military translation has great influence on the effect of military operation. This empirical study is designed to examine the effectiveness of specialized parallel corpus in improving military translation quality. This study began with the construction of UN peacekeeping parallel corpus with 450,000 words.A componential-functional model of military translation quality assessment was then designed.Next step was comparative translation experiment with different translation instruments.During the experiment, the reliability and validity of rating scale were firstly examined and then 80 military junior cadets participated into the formal experiment. The total score was comprised of four sub-grades including target language,non-specialized content, functional and textual adequacy, and specialized content and terminology. Finally, related data were processed via SPSS paired-sample t test to examine the statistical significance of difference. This study preliminarily justified the advantages of specialized parallel corpus in translating peacekeeping texts.UN peacekeeping parallel corpus is more effective than traditional translation instruments in military translation in four aspects: the overall quality, quality of functional and textual adequacy, quality of target language and quality of specialized content and terminology. However, there is no significant difference in the quality of non-specialized content. This study will have theoretical and practical values for military translation studies, translation teaching and translators’ training.
