A Translation Report Of Introduction Part Of Guy Mannering

This report is based on the translation of Guy Mannering,a novel written by British historical novelist Walter Scott.The introduction part of the novel is chosen as the translation text.Guy Mannering,also known as Astrologer,is one of representatives novels of Scott.The first edition was published in Edinburgh in February 24,1815,and it was reprinted for 11 editions in Scott’s lifetime.There has not been any Chinese version up to now.The introduction part including the introduction written by Scott and Andrew Lang’s Introduction to Guy Mannering is selected as translation text,which introduces the prototype of several protagonists,the writing background of the novel and the evaluation of some mainstream publications to the novel at that time,etc.The report will give a detailed description of the background of the translation task,translation process and the problems encountered by the translator in the process of translation and the solution.In order to make readers understand the original content and grasp cultural connotation,the translator resorts to Newmark’s communicative translation theory.Domestication and free translation strategies are adapted to analyzed specific problems encountered in the process of translation on lexical level,syntactic level,original style and cultural significance to reproduce the content and thoughts of the original text in the context of the target language,making target readers can understand content and style of the original text as much as possible.In the literary translation,translators should strive to make the translation conform to the reading habits and thinking patterns of target readers,helping them better understand the content and style of the original text so that the purpose of literary communication and cultural exchange could be achieved.
