Reading is the main way to help people get information.Reading teaching is also an important part in English teaching,which requires a lot of teaching time.For senior high school students,English reading plays an important role in their English learning.Traditional reading teaching pays more attention to the explanation of vocabulary and grammar rather than to discourses and language usage in context.Students only attain superficial knowledge like words,sentences and grammar,which can not meet the requirements raised by both the New English Curriculum Standards and the National College Entrance Examination.Thus,introducing discourse analysis into English reading teaching in senior high schools to cultivate students' discourse competence is worth discussing.Discourse analysis theory holds that the basic unit of language is discourse.Readers can understand the discourse more efficiently by grasping its function and structure,especially cohesion and coherence,and then they can learn and use the language much better.In order to verify the validity of discourse analysis in senior high school's reading teaching,the author tries to apply the idea of discourse analysis to high school English reading teaching,and designs three teaching steps of "leadingin-understanding-feedback",and implements them in teaching.In this paper,the author attempts to solve two main problems: 1)How can the teacher help students apply the discourse analysis to reading in teaching? 2)What effects will applying the discourse analysis to students' reading bring?.In order to answer the above questions,the author conducted teaching experiments in Class 4(experimental class)and Class 2(control class)of Grade 3 of a senior high school in Jiangsu province from September to December 2018,and conducted questionnaires.The experimental results show that discourse analysis reading teaching is more conducive to improving students' reading ability.At the same time,it can also help students get rid of some bad English reading habits.Therefore,discourse analysis reading teaching can broaden the horizon of reading teaching,make up for some deficiencies in traditional reading teaching,and help improve the existing reading teaching methods.
