| For a long time,American films have led the world’s filmdom,due to the sophisticated industrialized system,especially the mainstream American films produced by Hollywood studios.However,if want to form a complete American film industrial system with these commercial films that is obviously not enough.Therefore,the independent films involved by this paper are regarded as an indispensable part of American film industry.To be more precise,on the one hand,American independent films perfect the diversification of American film culture,with independent and high quality that do not compromise with the market.On the other hand,a group of outstanding filmmakers who used to independent films but then turn to big studios,who have provided new generations with creativity for the mainstream industry.In the 1990 s,with the rise of American independent films,the Sundance Film Festival has gradually entered the horizon of public.The Sundance Film Festival now is an important part of the development of American independent films.The film festival committee and association have power to determine which films the public will see,and which films will be awarded and receive the focus of distributors.It will also decide whether an independent film will have an opportunity to enter the screening platform to meet the audience.According to what we know,the Sundance Film Festival and independent films are inextricably linked,which also shows the Sundance Film Festival itself has a uniquely cultural temperament.For who love independent films,the Sundance Film Festival is considered as an influential film festival in North America and the world.The Sundance Film Festival follows the award ceremony of the traditional film festival,but not limited to the annual film festival from January to February.It has turned from a little-known regional film festival to a diversified film festival with various competition agendas,film labs and project formations.After 40 years till now,a process from the birth to of advance,the deep meaning is not simply to portray a history of American independent film industry,but also outlines the social and cultural landscapes of the “X-Generation” and the“Professional Management Class”.This paper chooses the Sundance Film Festival and American independent films as research objects,which have importantly cultural reference and significance.Recently,most of the researched stress studies to film industry and art films,but researches that refer to film festivals are not highly noticed.The academic research on film festivals in China are still fledging,compared to other aspects in film studies.Also researches on the Sundance Film Festival and the Americanindependent films is rare.Moreover,for an independent filmmaking that plays an important role to the American film industry,that lacked research on it,is not conducive to the comprehensive development of film festivals.This article tries to discuss the change of the Sundance Film Festival,from the relationship between the Sundance Film Festival and American independent films;to the spiritual culture of it,but also includes the integration of Sundance and Oscar.The aim is to conduct a more in-depth analysis to the Sundance Film Festival.At the same time,in addition to the discussion of Sundance’s independent film culture,the article also studies the agenda setting,business mechanism and commercialization of independent films. |
