E-C Consecutive Interpreting Tactics For Long Sentences Under Back-transformation Theory

During the process of E-C consecutive interpreting,complex syntax structures and intensive information of long English sentences often hinder the performance of trainee interpreters as they would cling to external forms of sentences instead of conveying the message.Focusing on the rendition of long English sentences,this practice report explores and analyzes failures in one consecutive interpreting task completed by the author.During the task,due to the inability to shake off surface structures of long English sentences in the original speech,the author produced renditions that are negatively redundant,logically mistaken and fragmented.To better cope with these problems,the author applied Nida’s Back-transformation theory and proposed tactics accordingly,i.e.simplifying notes by reducing surface structures to underlying kernels,grasping semantic contents of words according to the four semantic categories proposed by Nida,and restructuring information by addition.And these tactics are proved to be effective through self-evaluation and third-party feedback.
