A Report On E-C Translation Of Appearance Description In American Novel Seduce Me At Sunrise

This is a translation practice report based on the E-C translation practice of the American romance novel Seduce Me at Sunrise,characterized with the numerous long sentences of appearance description when portraying the characters.Appearance description covers description for characters’ physical appearance characteristics,including looks,stature,clothing,facial expression,figure,posture,habitual features etc.Appearance description can vividly reveal characters’ thought and character and express writer’s preference,predicting the destinies of characters,which stands as the reflection of the writer’s ingenuity,especially in literary works.The translation of appearance description containing rich meanings values much.This report aims at analyzing the difficulty encountered by the translator in translating of appearance description in the novel: difficult to restructure the original three complex English sentences applied in appearance description into acceptable Chinese sentence,namely: sentences with verb-less clauses;sentences with finite subordinate clauses and sentences with non-finite clauses and provide corresponding translation methods and skills.In accordance with Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the corresponding translation techniques are experimented and discussed: Chinese four-character structure;addition;paraphrase;conversion;combination;sequential translation and division,with hope to improve the translation quality of the text of appearance description and satisfy receptor readers’ expectations.
