As comprehensive art of the stage,musical has a variety of forms no matter about content or form,and its complexity consists of music,dance and drama.Among them all,dance as an important consisting part in musical play that narrates together with singing,dialogue,perform and lines,plays a vital and irreplaceable role in the building typical character,promoting the development of the plot and emphasizing main idea in a script.Looking throughout the history of revolution about script and dance we can find that as script’s development and reformation on it self,the dance in script also after unceasingly enriched and adjusted,showed different dramatic features,lyrical features and entertainment features during different periods.However,people always have a kind of misunderstanding to dance,which called skillfulness in narration,while bad at narrative,caused dance has a low status in script for a long time,after a long-term development,dance’s status in musicals was promoted,narratives of dance gradually appeared,and dramatic dance became an important consisting part of musical’s plot.This research consists of three parts,the first part focuses on elaborating and defining the connotation and extension of the narrative aspects of dance in musicals,clear up the related concepts of dance narrative by Relevant Theories of Narratology and Art Philosophy.The second part focuses on the style,grammar and context of dance narrative in musical.Explain the specific content of dance in promoting story plot,shaping typical characters,highlighting dramatic conflicts and setting off performance atmosphere in musical works by analyzing the unique context,concrete way and specific context of dance narration in musical works,in order to locate the “existence of dance” in musical works.The third part focuses on the narrative structure and narrative effect of dance in musicals.This article makes attempt to investigate and research the dance’s narrative forms,arrangement,structures and acception on the basis of literatures review,cross-disciplinary comparison,cases analysis and vertical and horizontal dynamic analysis method,at the same time,use the method that combines openness and comprehensiveness,abstraction andconcreteness,and use Narratological relevant theories to exemplify that the dance in musicals has narrative.At the same time,starting from the relationship between artistic works and the real world,this paper analyses the narrative “language style”,“grammar” and “context” of dance in musical,and according to the theory of structuralist narratology,this paper makes an anatomical analysis of the narrative nature of musical dance from three aspects,symbolic layer of surface,structure layer of middle and function layer of deepest layer,as well as three main narrative structures of sequence,supplementary narration and interlude narrative,and discovers the dance narrative mechanism hidden behind it,so as to provide systematic research ideas and research system for discussing the narrative meaning of dance and breaking the long-standing misunderstanding that called “skillfulness in narration,while bad at narrative” in musical. |
