The Translation Strategies Of Coordinate Structures Containing "and" Under The Guidance Of The Cohesion Theory

Taking two cyber exercise reports issued by US Department of Homeland Security as a case,this thesis will explore the translation strategies of coordinate structures containing "and" under the guidance of the cohesion theory.The reports are classified as informative texts,containing a large number of coordinate structures with "and",which are difficult to translate.Recent studies on the translation of coordinate structures containing "and" mainly focus on the word order and the translation of coordinator "and".However,the author of the thesis finds that three other reasons for the difficulty of the translation of coordinate structures containing "and" include two or more coordinate items with much information,different habits of lexical collocation between Chinese and English,and different habits of cohesion devices between Chinese and English,on which adequate study has not been conducted.The cohesion theory was first proposed by M.A.K.Halliday and R.Hasan,and then it was widely applied into C-E & E-C textual translation studies.Under the guidance of the cohesion theory,translators should guarantee the textual cohesion of the translated texts when they do textual translation.Similarly,translators should guarantee the cohesion of the translated texts among the coordinate items and between the coordinate structures and the contexts when they deal with the translation of coordinate structures containing "and".According to the semantic meaning of the coordinator "and",this thesis divides the coordinate structures into two categories: one is the coordinator "and" displaying semantically coordinate relations and the other is the coordinator "and" that doesn't display semantically coordinate relations.As for the coordinate structures where "and"displays semantically coordinate relations,four cohesion devices,namely "conjunction","repetition","collocation" or "reference" are often adopted under the guidance of the cohesion theory.Besides,"conjunction" is often combined with one or more of the otherthree cohesion devices.As for the coordinate structures where "and" doesn't display semantically coordinate relations,"conjunction" is often adopted under the guidance of the cohesion theory.These translation strategies will be useful for the texts with coordinate structures containing "and" or similar grammatical patterns.
